First to flower is, ‘Gertrude Jeckyll,’ the perfect English Rose. Shy, lowly, oh so lovely is this Cinderella of the rose garden.  This royal is a bower Queen vigorously climbing the wall in search of light. Perfect scrolled buds unfurl into glowing, pink blooms that tower and droop. Crush a petal or linger. Inhale her quintessential Old Rose fragrance. Bewitched and bothered, you’ll fall in love.

~’Gertrude Jeckyll’: An English Shrub Rose

Bred by: David Austin

“It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important…People have forgotten this truth, but you mustn’t forget it. You become responsible forever for what you’ve tamed. You’re responsible for your rose.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, ‘The Little Prince’

Breaking Dawn

Sunlight breaks through an open window

Sneaks across the floor

From the near distance, trills a lonesome melody

The Magnolia, a holy stage

A  solitary bird performs a serenade,

Close your eyes

Sweet darling, dream awhile

You’re a fool to cry

Let my notes carry you

High above the treetops

Far from troubled lands …

And time suspends flight

Beneath a birdsong spell

Balanced on the blade of darkness

As he brushes morning’s light with a kiss

Ella

Queen Ella inspires my writing. Her sequins, satin, and sighs, to the way she wipes her brow. The swing of her head. It all mixes into a bewitching shot of seductive appeal.

What’s not to love about Young’s score, ‘Stella By Starlight’, Ned Washington’s lyrics, and Ella’s sultry swoon? An ‘endless spring’ or ‘Stella by starlight, with moon in her hair.’ Enchanted.

~ Victor Young, Ned Washington, Ella Fitzgerald

Fall in love all over again.

I dream you

in the dark. This is where our love is found. In a place, as far away as moonlight, is where you touch my skin.

Your hand slips into mine.

I can’t let go. You are the one who lifted me up; the one who left me on my knees.

Do you think if I begged the night hard enough

she’d give you back to me?
